multiple failures trying to install 12.10 from live DVD

Asked by Siva Smith

I'm new at Linux, and this is frustrating me beyond belief! I tried poking around a little. I can't even figure out how to confirm that the live DVD 'sees' my hard drive, in order to install Ubuntu properly! I tried to restart a full reinstall (deleting everything on the HD from the previous) several times! Sometimes I get an error message. Error code 10 was one. Other times the installer just crashes to desktop. You know, like Morrowind on Windows XP: poof, hi desktop background image. Are there step-by-step instructions somewhere for a newbie to follow? I tried searching this site for 'newbie install' but no dice.

Try to follow these instructions , and create a bootable USB-stick from within Windows XP..

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

Then set your BIOS to boot FIRST from the USB-stick and try to install Ubuntu again.

Thanks

@NikTh: I'd like to try your advice. Unfortunately, that requires two things I haven't got available to me at this point in time. Specifically, Windows XP and a USB stick.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you download the DVD ISO then burn it to a DVD?

Thanks

What Operating System do you have now ?

Don't you have a USB-stick .. 1GB - 2GB ?

Or you can burn again the DVD , to the LOWEST speed..

Thanks

I'm getting online using the live DVD, which was burned by a friend. And no, at present I don't own a USB stick. What's an MD5 test? And my friend who brought me the DVD works in the field (which is why he hasn't got time to teach me this stuff himself).

It works smoother on other systems as they use different hardware. What video chip does the system have? Does it have a make and model?

Okay. First, the link: it was helpful in explaining a few things, but that page seems to be for using an installed OS to test something like my DVD, which I'm not sure is or is not different from what I'd have to do at this point, which is to be running the OS from the disc - AND having it check itself. Somehow I have this mental image of a lie detector hooked to itself, in order for its veracity to be determined by itself. (Among less savoury images, but I think we'd all prefer I not go there.)

And... video CHIP? Is that another name for a graphics card?

It's a new OS to you, nobody is born knowing any OS

This one is a step by step instruction.
http://www.krizna.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-12-04-installation-step-step-screenshots/

in the second picture (ubuntu12_04-step-2), there is 'Check disc for defects', select this one and run, it will check the defects of you DVD, you will find if the DVD is intact for installation.

Another installation reference video,

Can you help with this problem?
