10.04 will be EOL/unsupported in a few months, so it's not a good idea to install it. You should try other desktops before giving up on 12.04. Install xubuntu-desktop package and log into xubuntu/xfce. xfce is a lot closer to the old interface than Unity.

Either install Xubuntu 12.04 (3 years of support) or at your current system install "gnome-panel" and login from "gnome-classic" or "gnome-classic(no effects)" if you want an Environment like 10.04.

Open the terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and apply the command below

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

Then logout and login

unistall gnome-panel with terminal like:

sudo apt-get uninstall gnome-panel

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

OR:

download an old gnome-panel version
and install old control-panel like:

gnome-panel --replace

OR:

Enlightment

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hannes-janetzek/enlightenment-svn
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install e17
