The Ubuntu/Lubuntu Community needs bootable Diagnostics

Asked by Gordon Kraus

My problems installing Lubuntu on an old PC to be used solely for backup during repair or replacement of my main computer were due to hardware problems with old my computer. I was able to create and use a LIVE LUBUNTU CD. I could not install it.

During installation, which I learned could take a long time on low resource machines, my computer hung up (I think). There was no screen display or activity on my DVD or Hard Drive. I sure could have used some direction as to when to give up installation.

After running the memory diagnostic from the Lubuntu menu, I determined that 128 mb of my 256 mb was defective and removed it. I tried installation again and my PC hung up.

I determined I had another serious problem when I could not install Windows. I wish the menu would have had additional options to test other components of my PC. I am fairly certain my hard drive was O.K. since Windows formatted it without problem before failing installation. The 12 year old PC was not worth fixing so I scrapped it.

I would like you to make available a download to create a bootable CD, DVD, USB drive etc. to analyze a PC to assure that it can install your products, as well as to recommend which installations can be run at all and which will run smoothly. In my case I only needed to use Google.

Since the Lubuntu installation file exceeds the size of a CD, I suggest adding diagnostics and adding a couple lines to the menu to test the CPU, hard drive, memory and other critical parts of the PC. I also suggest documenting guidelines for determining when the installation is installing and when the computer is hopelessly hung up.

A big advantage I see of Linux based OS's is that if you don't use a Windows PC for several months or years, it takes a long time (several hours) to update the Windows OS and virus protection. During the update process the computer is sluggish or not usable.
