Dell Purchase without Operative System

Asked by Brian Bailey

We normally purchase Dell Systems with a OEM license that we don't use because we have an Enterprise License Agreement with Microsoft for the Current Release of an operation system ( WinXp Win7 etc.. ). We have a built to order configuration that we use. Once we determime the components we normally don't change them until a new model is released.

The cost difference between a Dell 9010 (DOSFree Ubuntu ) and Dell 9010 ( OEM License ) could be 125.00 per units x the number of units we purchase coud be a considerable savings.

Has any one had any issues with compatibility issues, I'm sure that their should'nt be, since the only difference is the Operating System. The hardware would be dependent on drivers provided by the OEM. I'm aking only because I've always been forced to purchase the OEM license with each unit in the past, and this would be a cost savings measure on my part.

To make a long story short. I would purchase my Dell units with Ubuntu instead of Dell OEM Windows 7 software, build our systems as we did in the past without using the OEM License.

I have found in the past that Dell can be reluctant to sell computers without Windows installed, in the UK at least. Even when they have been advertised on the UK website.

However, It's the same PC whatever OS is installed so there should not be any compatibility issues. The only thing you may have slight issue with is that buying with Windows installed you get other software bundled in and this may include driver software for some of the hardware. In which case you may find that you need to install additional drivers as they may not be included in the standard (non OEM) install.

If this is the case you will not have any issue finding and installing the drivers, they are easily available on the internet but you will need to allocate time to do this. Otherwise I wouldn't expect any problems.

Can you help with this problem?
