dual boot with windows XP

Asked by don

I have a x86 P4 computer with windows XP that I installed u12.10 and I think the install went OK.
I re-partitioned the single harddrive and checked them, they are all reporting as healthy.

So, I just need to have the dual-boot menu at start-up but this PC just starts XP.
I tried booting to the u12.10 DVD and select the boot options but not sure what's next.
Your suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

In the liveCD, if you run:

sudo fdisk -l

DO you see linux parttions and the NTFS?

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I do see the NTFS and linux partitions.
I see the menu has selections on which one to boot from.
I choose the wrong one since it boots with the message'" missing Windows HAL"

Your suggestions are appreciated.

Great. If you run:

sudo update-grub

What is output?

Thanks

OK, I may not understand what you are asking but I will give this a try.

This PC will not boot so I am using the u12.10 install DVD to boot this computer.
When the kybd. logo appears, I press -SHIFT- key to get the boot menu.
I select install u12.10
I get to the drives menu where;
dev/sda5 NTFS = 60G
  /sda6 ext4 = 4G
  /sda7 linus swap = 1G(flash)
  /sda2 NTFS = 60 G

I don't know which drive to boot on and what to setup for the dual boot method.
Thanks for your help.

Try to press shift key to see grub and then select witch OS you want to boot.In my opinion 4B for /root is maybe not enough. It will be better to give Ubuntu 10GB.

I read your post one more time. You didn´t install ubuntu yet, didn´t you? If that is a case maybe http://members.iinet.net.au/~herman546/p22.html video can help you with installation process.

Can you help with this problem?
