Installation Problems

Asked by Frank Eberle

I have a previous version of Ubuntu on a laptop that also Windows installed on a separate partition and upon boot up I can choose which one I want. I was working on the Ubuntu side when the screen suddenly went black and I had to manually power down to get out. Now Ubuntu won't even boot and I have been trying to install the newest version of Ubuntu on the Ubuntu partition but can't seem to get it to work. I want to keep the windows part and am afraid of just booting from the cd drive for fear of losing Windows. Is there a way to boot Ubuntu from the cd using the root command line found in the recovery boot for Ubuntu? Or is there a way to boot from cd without losing Windows? Thanks.

If you delete the standing Uubuntu partitions (destroying all settings and data), then run the install and put the new Ubuntu in the new freed space.

If you don't delete Windows then you cannot lose it.
Boot from a live media of Ubuntu (CD/DVD/USB) and re-install Ubuntu upon the old installation.

Use the "something else" option to point out where Ubuntu will be installed. You must point and mount the / root partition at least for installation to begin.
BE CAREFUL the partition to point out . It has to be ext4 filesystem (NTFS / exFAT .. etc are filesystems of Windows).

If you are in doubt then from the live media , open a terminal and post back here the results of

sudo fdisk -l

Thanks
