Ubuntu 12.10 on my old laptop

Asked by Kapil

Hi,

I have Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

RAM 1 GB, Processor: Intel Dual Core Processor @ 1.67 GHz.

Until 10.10, I was a happy user of Ubuntu. It was superfast (FF Browsing and Eclipse).

But now, with latest releases of Ubuntu unity, it is very slow on my system.

Are there any performance fixes in 12.10?
Are there any tweaks which can help me?

I tried Lubuntu and preload but even that is not good enough.

I will downgrade to 10.10 as a last resort.

Please help.

Thanks,
Kapil

You said you tested Lubuntu and is slow ?
Maybe something else is going wrong here ?

Lubuntu considered as the most lightweight Ubuntu flavor. LXDE considered as the most lightweight desktop environment.

At my system allocated only 250MB of ram when it starts.

Ubuntu 12.10 , no , no performance fixes (at my opinion). I consider Ubuntu 12.10 as more heavy than Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Try to login from Ubuntu-2D environment and see if performance is better.

Thanks

Ubuntu 10.04 would be a better bet than 10.10 as 10.04 is still supported.

Take a look at Xubuntu
http://xubuntu.org/news/tag/12-10/

or install the "Classic" Desktop.

In a terminal enter

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

Log out and back in selecting "Gnome Classic"

Or watch this video

If Lubuntu is too slow then there is something wrong with your system. I just assumed (perhaps wrongly) you didn't like it. Xubuntu is slicker than Lubuntu but slightly slower. Ubuntu with the Classic Desktop is slicker and slightly slower than Xubuntu.

Ubuntu with the now default Unity interface is slowest of them all. But if you have a powerful enough PC many people, not all , prefer it.

Hi All,

Thanks much for your answers.

I installed
gnome-session-fallback

And currently its looking OK. (Somehow works faster than Lubuntu.. don't know how).

I also think that since Firefox has been updated a lot since Ubuntu 10.10, it is getting slower.

I am evaluating gnome fallback and will resolve this issue in a few days..

If all is now fixed please mark the question solved to close it.

I use "gnome-session-fallback" not because my computer is old and slow, it isn't. I just prefer it. The beauty of Linux is we have the choice.
