Hi

IBM Thinkpad R40 e

Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor- M 1.8GHz, L2 512 KB cache
1 GB ram (upgraded)
30GB hard drive

Hi

I tried to install Ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop on 3.1.2013. I erased the hard disk with IBM tools and did clean install burnt DVD. Evereything went fine, I got to the login screen, I login with my password, and i then get the red desktop, mouse cursor but nothing else. The only thing I could do was press Ctrl Alt Del to log out again.

Can you help?

I did get an error screen once, with lots of detail about files needing to be updated, but i wasn't able to copy it. I did have internet connection as I installed, which appeared to be working.

Can you help?

I also did an install side by side with Windows XP, with same result.

Wow!

Omigod it just worked by itself, I guess it had trouble downloading updates or something. Call it solved!

Well, an addenda. It stopped working again. After some effort I deleted it and tried installing ubuntu 10.04. Now it's working really nicely, even got spotify working through the Wine app! Beautiful, you've given a nearly 10 year old computer a new lease of life!

Thank you Ubuntu people!
