Why can't the upgrade/replace option also offer to replace a newer version with an older version

Asked by Erick Brunzell

I realize this is an odd question, but ever since Maverick we have a truly excellent, though under-documented, upgrade/replace option available in the live installer. I've found it to be generally flawless.

But I've recently encountered an up-tick in the number of users that upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 and would like to downgrade. So I'm wondering why the "replace" option offered by ubiquity can't handle a downgrade?

eg; would you like to replace 12.10 with 12.04 ?????

I thought about creating a wish-list bug report but I'd like to hear from Colin, Evan, or Dmitrijs before doing so. I mean if the thought is absurd there's no point in me wasting anyone's time.

OTOH from what I've seen I don't see why a downgrade couldn't work since all default settings are erased anyway.

Thanks in advance, Lance

The developers probably don't think enough people want it. Its not limited to Ubuntu however. The only way to get from Windows 8 to Windows 7 is to do a full install losing everything.

Ubuntu does listen to its users however; there is a separate web site for this.

You can suggest it here. Explain why you want it and it will be put to a vote if enough people want it it should be implemented.

The only way to "downgrade" to an older version is to reinstall.

Can you help with this problem?
