Toshiba Satellite U840 Installation problems

Asked by Murali

Hi, I am a first time Ubuntu user. Bought a Toshiba Satellite U840 recently and downloaded 12.04/32 bit version (i386 and not AMD version). But Ubuntu is unable to recognize the disk partitions and I am unable to install. Has anyone had similar problems and how did you solve it?

Is this Laptop has Windows 8 pre-installed ?

If yes , then try Ubuntu 12.10 64bit (AMD). AMD means 64bit , is not related to processor , is just the name.

Hi,
I have the same problem. When I try to install ubuntu 12.10 (for me 64 bit version), the installation software doesn't find both HD. On this computer, you have a SDD and a HDD. Maybe the problem is caused by the HDD controler (Intel RAID controler), but I can modify my partitions with Gparted without problem.
After I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 with a alternate version. In this case the installation soft finded the disks but impossible to format these disks (You must format Ubuntu system partition to continue the installation).

I hope to find a solution very fastly to use my favorite distribution.

I find a solution on http://askubuntu.com/questions/190689/only-sdb-shows-up-when-installing-12-04-on-a-new-dell-inspiron-14z.
To sum up, you must remove the Fast boot option on the BIOS and the Intel tools about the fast boot on Windows 7 . Then you start your live USB, and you execute "sudo dmraid -E -r /dev/sda" and "sudo dmraid -E -r /dev/sdb" in a terminal.
And when you launch the installation, Ubuntu detects your partitions.

I placed Ubuntu system on the SSD and the computer takes 5 secondes to start.

There is just one problem under Ubuntu, the autonomy. Maybe it's caused by the graphic cards Intel/AMD.

Hi Guys,

@NikTh, No. It was not a Windows8 laptop but pre-installed with Windows7 Home edition.

@Flodesirat, Thanks for suggestion and the askubuntu link. After removing the RAID metadata (through the sudo dmraid command) Ubuntu now recognizes the partitions and I was able to install 12.04 (alongside). Thanks for the help.
