Server 12.04.1 LTS can't boot i586 cpu

Asked by Thomas Benson

I downloaded Server V. 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit flavour, but when I tried to boot from it, I received an alert that the kernel requires an x86-64 cpu. It detected my i586 cpu, and said it is unable to boot. Is there another version available that will work? Thank you.

You have downloaded the 64bit ISO and your CPU isn't 64bit.

Thanks Andrew. I could have sworn I tried both "flavours" and got the same result. But now with the for sure 32-bit version I'm getting an error that my cpu does not have the pae (physical address extension) feature. So I'm still stuck . None of the work arounds I've seen look promising.
