Strange icons at bottom of boot screen

Asked by Joe Shook

What do the strange icons, one is like a side view of a Lego brick with an H on it in a rectangular frame followed by an equals sign and then a circle with a symbol of a man with outstretched arms and legs in it, at the bottom of my monitor mean? The system, using a 12.04 LTS install CD, continues to boot, with this screen remaining like that for about 3 minutes, then briefly displays this message:

EDD: Error 1888 reading sector 344125

(in an aqua color) for about 10-15 seconds, then shuts down to:

uncompression error

 -- System halted

Do I need to burn a new CD, download a new copy of the install .iso, or what do you recommend?

Thanks,

Joe Shook

The icons mean, "Type any key for a manual installation".
This avoids some video problems, but you may need to eventually select the function key options "nomodeset" when you get to the "Try vs. Install" screen.
As for a new CD:
1) Did you md5sum check the downloaded iso?
  See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Check the number against the listing in the link for your release listed at
  http://releases.ubuntu.com under the MD5SUMS link.
2) If using a CD/DVD, did you burn the disc as slowly as possible?
  See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
3) Did you select the media check before trying to install?
 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck
4) Did you ever do a "memory check" (another live-media menu choice) on your PC?
Doing the above can save you a lot of time struggling with a bad install media.

Hey, Ubfan! I appreciate your information and am just now getting back to my Linux tinkering, so once I've had a chance to eliminate some of the other more urgent issues I'm dealing with, I'll give you selections a try. I generally always do MD5SUM checks as well as Integrity and Memory Checks. Good advice to follow.

I'll get back to you when I relocate that particular CD and box and have the time available to experiment with them again.

Stay safe and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Can you help with this problem?
