Unsure of compatibility of new laptop

Asked by Scott

Hello everyone, its my first time asking a question here so thank you in advance for answering my question.

I am thinking of buying a new laptop from pcspecialist but am unsure if the laptop I am buying is compatible with Ubuntu. I am currently using ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop but probably will install ubuntu 12.10 on the potential new laptop.

The laptop I am getting is the 15.6" Enigma IV. The configurations are:

Display: 15.6'' Matte Full HD LED 16:9 widescreen (1920x1080)
CPU: Intel Core i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-3840QM (2.80GHz) 8MB
RAM: 16GB Samsung 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 Video Memory RAM - DirectX 11
Hard Drive: 480GB Intel 520 Series SSD
DVD drive: SONY BC-5550H 4x BluRAY Combo drive & Cyberlink Software
Sound Card: SRS 2 Channel High Definition Audio + MIC/Headphone Jack
Wireless: GIGABIT LAN & Wireless Intel Advanced-N 6235 (300Mbps) + bluetooth

Thank you very much for any help given!!! :D

The wireless and sound devices are not detailed enough. You need the chips they use. The descriptions on seller websites is rarely detailed enough. You need to know those chips. All that says is 'this laptop has a wireless chip', there are hundreds of different chips it can be, so you are not really being told much. A lot of wifi chips will work out of the box and some work with very little effort.

If you contact the seller, s/he may entertain a live USB test to see what works and doesn't. I recommnd you use Precise as it is supported for 5 years, wheras Quantal is only 18 months.

Thank you very much for your reply. The seller does not support linux so they said they cannot provide any information regarding linux use on their machines. However, let me call them up to see if they can give me the precise chip for the wireless and sound devices. Just another clarification: Does that mean all the components except the wireless and sound devices should work?

They are all generic enough so should work ok.

The sound card is part of a chassis made by a company called compal, the exact model number is QAL51.

Does this work as well?

Thank you very much!

Seems to be a RTL8188CE which can be a pain as far as I have seen, have a look online to see if people got it sorted etc

Can you help with this problem?
