12.4 un-bootable

Asked by Dick

Was on 11.04 and got message no more support so upgrade to 11.10.
Upgraded to 11.10. Sound didn't work (just like in 11.04). One recommendation was to upgrade to 12.4.1. Upgraded to 12.4.1 and had installation failures when some files uere un-zipping.
When 12.4.1 booted up had no programs such as program updater. Could not fix with failsafe boot and run repair packages.
Finally got to a point where I get a little terminal screen with 1 line and it's dead.
Tried to re-boot the 11.04 CD and that wouldn't work either.

Help!!! Ubuntu is dead. Fortunately I still have Windows to work from.

I need some magic program to fix Ubuntu without having Ubuntu to run under.

Why not just do a clean install of 12.04 This is the easiest way.

I am able to get UBUNTU booted now. There are no programs in DASHBOARD.

Also have access to terminal but don't know how to login: or password:

Once in terminal I don't know how to exit back to my desktop.
