What is a good linux system to us for a older Toshiba Portege 7020CT laptop?

Asked by Melinda

I have a older model Toshiba Portege 7020CT laptop, that I'd like to make useful again. So I thought of installing Ubuntu on it as I currently use that on my desktop but not sure which version is appropriate. The computer keeps asking to but a CD in the drive and I do not have the CD that goes with the laptop anymore. Below is the information on the laptop. Thanks! http://www.lonsteins.com/unix/linux/linux_laptops_portege7020.html

Lubuntu is great if you want a lightweight official Ubuntu release

The good thing about Ubuntu is that all versions are "try before you commit"

Ubuntu expects a reasonably powerfull PC , Xubuntu is a little less resource hungry so will be faster, Lubuntu has the most basic desktop but its still very useable.

I think for your computer, the full Ubuntu will will run but be painfully slow (if at all) , Xubuntu should be acceptable and Lubuntu should be reasonably quick.

I suggest you try each of live CD first, Make sure everything works then when you have chosen the one you like do a full install
