Reinstallation Help

Asked by Aaron

I think I need to redo my installation, but I'm hoping there's a way to do it without having to move all my data.

This is my current partition setup:

/dev/sda1 2048 206847 102400 de Dell Utility
/dev/sda2 * 206848 30926847 15360000 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda3 30926848 103581847 36327500 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda4 103583742 1250263039 573339649 5 Extended
Partition 4 does not start on physical sector boundary.
/dev/sda5 103583744 1237870591 567143424 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 1237872640 1250263039 6195200 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Does anyone feel like listing the steps I need to go through to reinstall? Or better yet, is there already a list of steps that I can use?

You can mount the system partition in liveCD and delete all folders and files except /home/username/folders-you-want-to-keep

Then reinstall. You may find the processes is more successful if you run a final full backup your data then reinstall and restore from the backup

Before I do something dumb, I should make sure I understand. Boot up using live CD, mount /dev/sda5, delete everything in the root folder apart from my home folder, and then install from the CD like I normally would?

indeed, probably better to run a backup but the /home/name folder holds the configs for your apps so if one of those is causing issues you will still have the issue when you reinstall

Personally I would back-up my data first doing a clean install to overwrite everything. This gives me a clean system so I can reinstall the applications I want then restore my data from the backup.

But the choice is yours

Can you help with this problem?
