Preparation for Ubuntu 12.10

Asked by Inderjit Singh

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 in my laptop since its launch. Mine is a dual boot system. Now I am waiting for next version due on 18th Oct'2012. On the web some information is available on How to ubuntu like what to do after installing ubuntu or what next . Through trial and error , some unwanted things got installed , I think so? Now , over the period in the ' Ubuntu Software Centre' at Installed following appears at present - 1. Provided by Ubuntu 2. Canonocal Partners 3. For Purchase 4. Independent 5. Oracle Java(JDK)7/ 8 Installer PPA 6. Toolchain Test Builds 7. Getdeb 8. Medibuntu and last 9. Unknown.
I do not know what changes these have made and what was officially required. Now before next upgrade I want to remove the unwanted things i.e. I want to keep only official software. Please guide me what is needed to be removed and How?

This is not easy.

Adding and removing software is not difficult using Software Centre, Synaptic or the Command line. However, keeping track of what you installed and why is more difficult especially as installing many packages will involve dependencies. By this I mean you install Package A this needs Packages B and C. You already have B so C gets installed at the same time: When you remove A you are not sure if either B or C ( or Both) need to be removed.

I usually take the alternative approach. Back up all my data to a separate external hard drive. I then do a clean install and put back everything I want. It can take a few weeks before I have everything I need loaded on the machine. I just put everything back on as and when I need it. This way the PC remains (mostly) clean.

I would. That way you get a totally fresh machine. Just let the CD fully replace everything.

When I say everything I just mean your old Ubuntu, Unless you don't want Windows any more.
