Lost windows partitions after Installing 12.04

Asked by Ashiq M K

My pc was running on win7 with partitions c,d,e and f. Then I tried to install Ubuntu 12.4 using usb but Ubuntu Grub won't show up if i remove th pen drive. So burned a cd and installed Ubuntu (replacing windows 7 ) everything went well, Ubuntu runs perfect.

Problem is, now none of th drives are visible in Ubuntu. I had drive full of data in d and e drives, all important.

All I want is my data back in the existing order. Even a data recovery, if possible, is fine. I don't care. about Windows.

I did installation like this.
Booted from disc, when asked chose Install Ubuntu and replace Windows, in a place where we choose drive it showed me a slider with max 50gb, I chose around 25gb for installation (ticked 3rd party download and update while installing).

Someone please suggest a solution.

Spare me some hope.

This looks to me like you only have one drive and its all allocated to Linux. Check the spec of your PC if it says you have 250GB hard drive then its all been used by Linux.

That being the case its lost. I'm not sure if some data recovery will be possible but it won't be easy. The file format has changed from what it was before (probably NTFS) to ext4. Some data may still be there but there is no guarantee and you would need expert help.

Don't you have any backups?

First there is no guarantee of getting anything useful off your drive.

You need to find an expert who will take your hard drive away mount it in another computer and try to recover the data. These companies are not cheap and I can't recommend one as I have never personally had the need.

I suggest that you start by searching for "forensic data recovery" or similar in your favourite search engine.

This all assumes that Ubuntu has not actually used the space already for its data and programs.

Why do you not have a backup?

A 250Gb USB drive is 40 GBP (64 USD)

Is getting all your data back 100%pristine worth that much, the answer is probably YES. So why do you not have this?

Can you help with this problem?
