Which Ubuntu actually works on my pc...?

Asked by the_webninja

Tried inputting every sudo- idea on the board and nothing works. I got an idea, why not produce just ONE version that actually works, and stick with that? You keep producing 9.10, 10, 11, 12, yet none of them work unless we spend countless hours screwing the sudo- crap to get it to work. What is wrong with this picture?

I want just ONE that WORKS. Tell me which one it is Please.

Which Ubuntu actually WORKS? THAT is the Question.

Widows does the same. 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Wn7, Win8. Why not just keep one.

Nothing is wrong with the picture. Sudo is what Ubuntu uses to run admin commands. Its nothing hard.

do you have an actual question or is this a pathetic rant?

My original post read "unavailable in current data" someone changed the title, it may have made more sense if they left the error message in the Title.

Here is the whole story: Tried to download and install Ubuntu 12.04 used Ubuntu 10.04 and Start Disk Creator to create a bootable USB Drive for Ubuntu 12.04 It did not work. Went into set up options made USB first boot sequence. Did not work. Tried making another USB boot drive, it did not work either.

So I grabbed my Ubuntu 9.10 disk I got straight from the Distributors, it installed 9.10 on my Toshiba Satellite with 1TB HD 8GB Ram, Nvidia Video Card, and Harman/Kardon Sound.
After installation, went to coffee shop connected to Internet tried update using; sudo apt-get update
received "Failed to Fetch" errors one after another. Tried to use Software Center to install SMPlayer and Mplayer, and Libdvdcss and everything I tried to install all I got was "unavailable in current data".

So then I formatted my brand new 1TB HD AGAIN and then Re-installed 9.10 and when I tried to play a video using Mplayer I got "no URI handler implemented for dvd"

Then going to check my e-mail at google and yahoo I get errors saying my Browser is outdated and needs plugins which it cannot install.

So you think this is just a "Rant" after i go through all this frustration huh?
okay here is a "Rant" for you to help clarify the situation for you a little;
I will pay ANYONE who can compile a Flawless (and I DO mean FLAWLESS Ubuntu Installation Disk, which includes SMPLAYER, MPlayer, Amarok, and DVDrip and all the Software and Updates I need to Download Videos off of Youtube, Download Mp3s from Mp3 stores, Use Video Chat, )

I will pay ANYONE who can compile a Working installation disk with all the Software I would need to do everything I mentioned above without ERRORS! If you can compile an Installation disk for Ubuntu like this I will send you $100 U.S. Dollars to your Paypal Account after I have installed the disk and found it perfectly usable and flawless. I got a hundred bucks that says you can't do it.
Money Talks and BS walks, now what do YOU got?

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?

Karmic is no longer supported so using it is pointless, there are no updates and no support for it, so you will get 'failed to fetch' errors as there is no support. ust like if you installed Windows 95 and tried to check for Windows updates. They aren't there. What did you expect from a release that is dead??

You don't have to 'compile' anything in Ubuntu, it uses binary deb files, not source as would be the case in Gentoo and similar.

We don't want money, we just want you working.

The first person who sends me a Flawless Ubuntu Installation Disk which includes, WORKING Updated, Fox Fire, Google Chrome, Mplayer, SMPlayer, Dvdrip, Amarok, and Adobe Flash, and Video Download software as well as software for downloading Mp3 files and using Video Chat, will recieve $100 U.S. Dollars sent to their paypal account. As soon as I check the Disk and install the Ubuntu and make sure everything works right without errors I will send you the Money to your Paypal Account. Any disks I recieve after that I will return. As I said before I just need ONE that's it. JUST ONE.

Send the Installation Disk to:
Mark Evans
3275 Rosecrans Street
San Diego, CA. 92110

As I said before, Money talks and BS walks, what YOU got?

I can just as easily go buy a Version of Windows, Windows 7 only costs around $50 but I want someone to make Ubuntu WORK. NO BS. make it work, or I will go hire some Chinese guy to make me an OS. :)
I'm not like most of the people who use Ubuntu just because they are too cheap to BUY an OS.
I Choose Ubuntu because of the Benefits, but it is not working. You need to make it work.
No ifs, ands or buts about it. I don't want any excuses, I want RESULTS! NOT ERRORS!

Okay, no one sent me a good disk yet so I ordered a 12.04 disk from Conical (Probably mis-spelled that)
Anyways, put the disk in the DVD drive of my Toshiba Satellite with 8GB ram 1TB and an i7 CPU, and it installed beautifully. However as soon as I booted it up from the Hard Drive, I tried to play a DVD, would not Play, I tried to Play an MP4 Video, it would not play, I tried to play an Mp3 File, it would not Play, I tried to Load a .tga file it would not recognize the file type, (It's a common Loss-less Image File) then I tried to access the Wireless, 12.04 recognized BOTH of my Wireless Adapters, I have one Internal (which is junk) so I use an External from Realtek which has I high gain Amp in it. It Recognized BOTH Adapters yet would not allow me to enable either one of them. It stated Hardware Switch is off.
Okay so what am I suppose to do about THAT?

I went into Set up options in the Boot Sequence to see if there was something I could do, Nope, checked all the Menus looking for Options, nothing I could find. So once again I have an Ubuntu System that looks really Pretty but is basically Non-Functional.
What good is it if I can't DO anything with it? And WHY are the people who are putting the disks together sending out Crap that doesn't WORK?

I asked the Question again WHICH UBUNTU Actually WORKS?

I have 2 Pentium Systems at home running 10.04 one with 2 GB, one with 4GB the one with 4GB works very well, but it took me 3 Months of screwing with it to get it that way. IT SHOULD NOT BE LIKE THAT!
The one with only 2GB of Ram Locks up all the time.

When you can get an Ubuntu WORKING it WILL actually out preform Windows. For example the 12.04 actually Recognized ALL my Hardware in my Toshiba Satellite Laptop , while the same Laptop would not even Install XP because the Software could not even Recognize the Hardware properly. Window 7 is slow and locks up all the time as well. But Ubuntu 12.04 runs Smooth and recognized all my Hardware, it just does not have any of the Decoders loaded to perform any useful functions, and without being able to USE the Wireless, how can I update or Download anything to make it work?

Does ANYONE have an Ubuntu Disk that actually WORKS after you install it.
I am trying to put together I Laptop that I am going to Sail across the Pacific with, and I am not going to be able to play around asking a thousand questions on Message boards, just to get the damn thing working. I need to be able to USE it. Comprende?

Did you install the DVD decoder in the OS?

I wanted to Update this post, being that a lot has changed since I first Posted this.
I think the primary cause of my original frustration was the USB Download Version was very difficult to get to work.
(That's history, I already got a CD from the distributors.)
Then when I could not get the Wireless to work I freaked out. Okay to update everything and be Fair,
I went through an enormous amount of problems with Windows 7 and when I encountered problems with Ubuntu it just made me even MORE frustrated. Finally I mellowed out and that helped me think clearer. I made the choice to try out 12.04 using an 80gb Hard Drive and I decided to work through all the problems I could to see if I could actually USE it or not. Well, Ubuntu 12.04 passed the Test on my 80gb Hard Drive so I decided to Install it on my Primary 1TB Hard Drive and make Ubuntu my Primary OS.
Now I am Using Ubuntu 12.04 as my Primary OS for my Laptop. And I plan on Continuing to use it.
The only suggestions I might make at this point is the Image manipulators I am finding really are not all that great. I think any Linux Programmer who really wanted to make a Difference should go to Cerious.com and check out Thumbs Plus and use THAT as a Model for designing a really GOOD Image Manipulator for Linux. Next I am really Diggin "Mixx" program, but I think it could be tweaked a little more like the Virtual DJ for Windows. Other than those things I am really happy that I switched back to Ubuntu, I am doing everything I wanted to with it, and more now. So this Issue is Solved.
(Thanks for the people who put up with my Whinning and complaining.)
