Most modern laptops ubuntu will work with jsut fine, and judging by those specs you can go ahead.

Thank you; but what distro should I run to be more useful? to me (12 or 11)?

Should be fine with Ubuntu 12.04. Resize the NTFS in Windows and you can install to the freed space. '12 or 11' are not different distros, they are a different RELEASE of the same distro, which is Ubuntu.
