How to repair O.S. (Ubuntu 12.04)?

Asked by Navin Talati

We all are aware of the facility available with Windows versions that after installin it and using for some time, the O.S. may cause some problems and interruptions in working. So we usually repair the O.S. with a bootable CD. This is the facility to repair the OS without disturbing other softwares installed. Can this way UBUNTU 12.904 be repaired through its installation CD ? The installation CD we usually prepare by burning downloaded .iso files.
If it is possible, How it could be done without disturbing the installed softwares?
Thanks to all in anticipation.

Is your installation bootable? If it is not, you can use the "boot repair" tool on a LiveCD to repair the GRUB installation and restore bootability. This will not disturb any installed packages, with the possible exception of GRUB (if you choose to purge and reinstall it using Boot Repair).

If your installation is bootable, and you simply want to "reset" it, you may be able to accomplish this using the dpkg-reconfigure and apt-get tools. Please provide more information describing the exact nature of your problem, and I may be able to provide further assistance.

You can also chroot from the Ubuntu liveCD and run as many commands as you can in the liveCD OS as you can in the installed OS. The commands will manipulate the OS you have installed. This is not really an ability in Windows to the same degree.

This link shows how to get chrooted and you can then fix your installed OS:

Thx Niccola. Good concept, but alas it would be a massive work to offer this selection.. Similar to re-writing the entire application. So no longer for this year. You can see more detail here https://westtechfoundation.com/

Can you help with this problem?
