Installing ubuntu: won't boot from ubuntu install media...

Asked by Owen Inish

Following instructions to download your operating system, I received something called "ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386" which is being identified as a "Disc Image File" and is 711.980 KB in size. (I thought the op system was supposed to be several gigs in size..?)

I've repeatedly tried to get the computer to boot with this ubuntu file, from the memory stick, or from a CD (with nothing else on them.) Computer invariably responds with "Missing operating system": it's not finding anything it can identify as an operating system.

I can't find any answer to this problem, after spending considerable time, on many days, exploring and reading the copious info on many pages of your website. I've created a login account to ubuntu. Following numerous indicators speaking of "live chat" support, never found anywhere I can create a chat message. Just an endless carousel of pages talking about how I have to have this server to get this program to access this channel to get into chat that never seems to appear anywhere.

PLEASE HELP as soon as you can.
Thanks very much

Hi there,

I see, that you run into the problem with installing operating system. This is known error and solution for it is very simple. I suggest you, that you read this thread where is everything explained in details and you will know everything how to solve your question. Link for the topic is here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/133332/missing-operating-system-after-installing-ubuntu-12-04-from-a-cd-on-a-macbook It's explained for macbook pro but is the same for other systems.

Btw, you have probably some issues with your usb stick, try to copy your files again on it.

If this helps you solve your question, please mark thread as solved.

Regards,
Miha

Hi ,

Ok! Fist of all , your .iso image seemed to be correct . Almost 700 MB is the .iso image of Ubuntu. (Desktop CD)

To make a bootable usb flash drive , you must do it via unetbootin.

Grab unetbootin from here : http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

You can do the procedure from inside windows. Check the guide here : http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/#install
You must open unetbootin with right click and open as administrator.

When the installation finish , then boot from Usb.

Thanks

Make sure you MD5 test the ISO so that you know it is complete and consistant.

Thanks everybody.

I downloaded UNetbootin, went thru the steps, everything seemed to work OK. Told me it was finished what it was doing with the ubuntu file & my USB stik, & that I should reboot now.

I started to reboot. I went to re-boot menu. I chose 'boot from USB' (only one inserted.)
Got UNetbootin dialogue box, saying it would boot in 10 seconds.
THEN got ERROR MESSAGE: "Invalid or corrupt kernel image"

I re-started the computer, & opened the USB stik that UNetbootin was supposed to set up as my ubuntu operating system stik.

It was an empty stick when I put it in. It's now got all these system-like files, apparently from whatever UNetbootin / ubuntu did with it.

But I notice almost everything on it displays its "Size" as "0 KB" (....??)

What now?
Thanks again

Hello ,

Did you open Unetbootin as Administrator ?

or

maybe a usb stick (hardware) problem ?

Please download again the .iso image from here : http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/

and do again the procedure with one difference : 1st delete - format the usb to Fat32 filesystem.

Also at unetbootin's menu click the first option "Default"

Thanks

Hi NIck
Yes, I'm Administrator on my computer: there is no other user.

And I did definitely re-format a blank USB stik in advance as Fat32.

Do you mean download the Ubuntu system all over again? To a blank USB stick?

What about all these mountains of system files that Unetbootin seems to have put on the stick? Are they supposed to be there? In addition to the Ubuntu op system file?

I'll try this again & let you know if it works.
Thanks a lot

I meant to download the .iso again. Maybe the one you downloaded is corrupted.

I gave you the Official site : http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/

Use this .iso image and do the procedure again , with Unetbootin. Yes it needs a blank Usb stick (at least 2GB) and FAT32 filesystem.

Good Luck !

The unetbootin system transfers the relevant files from the ISO to the USB and makes it bootable.

Thanks for your replies. Maybe I should back up a bit:

I'm trying to put it onto a USB stick BECAUSE

[Pardon message error just above]
Thanks for your replies. Maybe I should back up a bit:

Maybe the question is DO I NEED TO PUT UBUNTU ON REMOVABLE STORAGE AT ALL?
I'm trying to put the op system on a USB stick BECAUSE instructions seem to be telling me to do that: to put it on a USB stick or on a CD.

Am I wrong in thinking that's necessary? I'd be perfectly happy to download it right to the hard drive. That's what the computer seems to do automatically, anyway: when I go to the site Nick just pointed out (in his preceding message), and click the type of version I'm choosing, it starts downloading directly to the "Downloads" folder on my hard drive. It can stay there, as far as I'm concerned.

Is that OK? But then to boot . . . ?

I'd be glad to REPLACE the Windows7 op system (which I hate passionately) that came with the computer; but don't want to take that step until I've got Ubuntu running, see that it works, that I like it, etc.

I'd also like to keep Windows7 around as back-up, in case of some program that I can't run without it, etc.

So this means the question here may be DO I NEED TO PUT IT ON REMOVABLE STORAGE AT ALL?
If I DON'T put it on a stick or CD,
guess I need to to store it in a DIFFERENT hard drive than Windows, and
need to choose that alternate hard drive in the boot menu . . . right?

That's possible, right?
Thanks again

Do you want to install Ubuntu in you PC , in you system , in your Hard Drive Disk or you want to have Ubuntu in the Usb stick and boot from there every-time you connect the usb stick your PC ?

Clarify that , and we will tell you how you can do this.

Thanks

Yes, I want it on my PC, in my system.

I only tried to put it on a stik because the instructions said to do that.

Thanks Nick

Oh & as you suggested above, I also just re-downloaded from http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/.

What I got there is "ubuntu-12.04.1-server-i386"; identified as a "Disc Image File" size 645 MB (676,638,720 bytes)

Ubuntu server has no Desktop Environment. Are sure you want Ubuntu Server ? Do as @actionparsnip suggested and Check MD5 first.

OK I went back to your message of 31 Aug, Nick.

Went back to unetbootin site.

This time instead of trying to apply unetbootin to an ubuntu iso I had already downloaded,
I clicked to just LET UNETBOOTIN DOWNLOAD the iso AND set it all up.

THEN it all WORKED. I have Ubuntu up & running.
YAY!

Thanks a million for all your help.

I have a new quesiton. Would it be OK if I e-mail you?
