will using the DVD of 12.04 UPGRADE linux mint to Ubuntu

Well I have been trying to remove the mate as the keyring would never install So I have been removing more and more of it for the last few days . . and installed gnome panel and almost all I could find so I could remove the mate without crashing . . Ok will using the DVD 0f 12.04 UPGRADE the computer and replace mint ? . . There was a question with answers which said something about using the new versions will let you UPGRADE with out using the UPDATE manager which is only working part way now !
