Installation issues

Asked by Stephen

Tried using a fresh disc to install ubuntu on a new HDD. Windows 7 disc image burner found no issues while burning the disc, and I am currently using the "Try ubuntu" before installing feature. However, when I try to install it encounters errors. It says the disc may have burned too fast.

Is there a way to install ubuntu directly from the internet? Any other suggestions on how to correct this issue?

I also have a windows 7 OEM disc, though it will no longer let me try to install it now that I have tried to install ubuntu. I assume I may have to delete both partitions in order to create a new one? Wasnt too sure on that either :(

Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

You can try installing Ubuntu from a usb stick, if you're sure your downloaded iso image is fine. A good installer is at http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/#button

It needs WinXP or newer (or Wine, the Linux Win emulator). Just run it and select the iso image you want and it'll create a bootable Ubuntu usb stick. Read all the instructions on the download page (esp. the expandable sections), don't forget to set your BIOS to boot from the usb for the initial boot, and it should work fine. I don't know Win7 but it's likely you've a corrupt master boot loader (MBRecord) - it's probably repairable via a rescue package like
http://www.sysresccd.org/SystemRescueCd_Homepage
but you'd probably learn way more than you want. :) The bootable Ubuntu usb will take care of your MBR issues, and you can tell it not to over-write your existing Win7 partition, and it will offer to include it in the boot (Grub) menu.

if you run into any issues, remember, Google is your best friend. :) It's likely that any questions you might have are already answered on the Net somewhere.

Or use infrarecorder, it's free and burns standard CDs. The Windows CD burner isn't very good:
