ubuntu installation stops at "time set"

Asked by jim

I have a compaq 5900z with 256mb of memory-----------ubuntu 7.1 boots but when I click to install it stops installing at the "set time" page-----any suggestions---I would hate to have to go back to Windows98SE.

256MB is below the minimum memory requirements for the 7.10 desktop CD. (I realise that this is unfortunate; we have a project underway to try to bring these back down for 8.04.) I suggest that you use the alternate install CD instead, available from our web site; one of its purposes is to cater for systems with lower memory.

Thanks Colin for the info about 7.1-------------perhaps you could suggest another version that would install---and that I could upgrade after installation.? thanks again

Like I say, use the 7.10 alternate install CD. Visit this URL, and make sure you select the "Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD" option:

  http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

It's also directly downloadable from here, although this may be slower as it will use the central download server rather than downloading from a mirror closer to you:

  http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/
