Which version should I choose for a non windows PC

Asked by Phil Romford

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop with 256MB system RAM ( am upgrading to 512MB). The PC has no operating system installed. The HD is re-partitioned and ready for Linux.

I have tried to install from old CD versions, 8.04 and 9.1 but they are now corrupt. It is impossible to load 12.04. I have also tried 10.10 alternate, but no luck.

Can anyone suggest what version I should try?

I did have Ubuntu on this laptop alongside Windows XP at one time, so the machine will cope with Ubuntu in some form. Its frustrating having spent fruitless hours on this!

Thanks in advance.

You might try Lubuntu, which you can get here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/12.04/release/. I won't lie - it's not pretty out of the box, but it seems to be more lightweight and with some modifications, I've got mine all gussied up to my liking. Good luck.

Please also note that the versions you've mentioned are EOL and no longer supported.

Hmmm,

Burned LUBUNTU Alternate, that won't run either. Is it a bad download or bad CD? I don't know; I have not been able to work ut how to use the MD% checksum tool. Is there aw method for checking a download/disc under Windows?

I'm losing the will to live.

Thought you might like to know that 12.04 LTS is working, using it right now. However, it takes an age to boot up; memory and processor limitations I imagine.

Thanks for your suggestions.
