What should I do if I want to change my OS from Windows 7 to Ubuntu?

Asked by Ryan

Hello!

I have been using Windows 7 for almost 3 years now and some has changed. For the past two months my computer was letting me down. I had trouble watching videos, playing music, and using flash. My friend recommended me to Ubuntu and I tried it out on my USB. It was quite different but I got to know a bit of it in 30 minutes. I am not sure how to change the OS or should I change my OS. What if I doesn't work out? What if I couldn't switch back?

1) download the iso installation cd image (i suggest you to install ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64)
from here http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/
To avoid download errors please prefer the torrent protocol to download the iso image.

2) verify the md5sum of image to be sure to not waste your time using a damaged dl iso file
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

3) made a installation cd from the verified .iso image file burn the iso
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BurningIsoHowto/

4) boot your pc from the install cd you have made and follow the menu... you must not see windows starting, your pc must boot entirely from Ubuntu install cd.

5) Try Ubuntu without install to check if you have video trouble...

6) Start installation by clicking on the desktop install icon, at install steps answer to use entire disk when requested if you want get rid of windows 7 or choose to install side by side if you want to keep Win7 and you will be able to choose the operative system on every pc boot
