help to launch linux in virtualbox

Asked by brenden chen

A Linux and Virtualbox newbie here asking for assistance.

I just downloaded the Virtualbox ver 4.1.18 and windows installer for ubuntu (for ubuntu desktop 12.04 LTS, a wrong choice??).
Now I do get to choose between win7 or ubuntu when I start the laptop, but I cannot seem to run the ubuntu on Virtualbox.
I found some instructions online to install linux on Virtualbox but none seems to work.
Can anyone help with - preferably - a step by step instruction on how to install linux (from ubuntu) onto Virtualbox? Is windows installer for ubuntu the "wrong" choice to be used under Virtualbox ? Do I need to download another "linux" (and remove the ubuntu)?

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you all.

Please answer these Questions:

What is the primary operating system on your laptop now
Do you want Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as the primary operating system
or do you want to install VBox on Windows and Linux in VBox.

Thanks for the help -
My answers -
1. primary OS is win7
2. I do not want ubuntu to be the primary OS
3. I've installed VBox on Win7 and yes, I plan to install Linux in VBox while I run other programs in Win7

"I found some instructions online" What instructions? Where ? A URL would be helpful.

Look at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox/

Thanks arochester for the link, but new problems emerged and I still could not complete the installation of Linux in the VBox.
Problem 1 - I got the following message popping up after I double-clicked the guess VM.
"The virtual machine window is optimized to work in 32 bit color mode but the virtual display is currently set to 16 bit.
Please open the display properties dialog of the guest OS and select a 32 bit color mode, if it is available, for best possible performance of the virtual video subsystem.
Note. Some operating systems, like OS/2, may actually work in 32 bit mode but report it as 24 bit (16 million colors). You may try to select a different color mode to see if this message disappears or you can simply disable the message now if you are sure the required color mode (32 bit) is not available in the guest OS"

I have NO idea how to fix this as in my display properties dialog of the guest OS, I find NO selection of the color mode. (the display dialog has two tabs - one "Video"; two "Remote Display". There is no mention of 16 bit or 32 bit under either tab)

Problem 2 -VBox pops up another window (in black) and the new window shows the following sentences at the top
"This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
pae
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU"

No solution to either one so I am still stuck at installing the Linux onto VBox.

I deleted my original VM on VBox and started a new VM.
Now no pop-up error messages. Linux is successfully launched in the VBox.

Thank you all for the help !
