Thank you Sam - I have converted this issue to a bug.

I also have a partial workaround to load Ubuntu 12.04 with the webcam disabled. I physically unplugged the webcam and Ubuntu installed (almost) without a hitch. After the install was completed, and updates completed, I replugged the webcam but Ubuntu did not detect the webcam device. Ubuntu operates correctly, but the webcam does not function.

To physically unplug the webcam:
- power down and remove power supply and battery.
- remove three screws from the battery compartment
- remove the plastic cover from between the keyboard and screen.
- unplug the small white rectangular plug with 4 wires on the right hand side
- reassemble.

Another small issue occurred late in the Ubuntu installation where there was a problem with the NVIDIA driver. I skipped this step and installed the NVIDIA driver once Ubuntu was up and running.

Thanks for the update and well done concerning the rather unusual physical workaround.
The webcam may have caused this segfault ->
camerasrc-real-[8615]: segfault at 4 ip b1142c4c sp a817ff70 error 4 in libgstreamer-0.10

Maybe query the web with webcam specs to gather some information.
And yes, unfortunately Nvidia issues in 12.04 are also known.

Can you help with this problem?
