Ubuntu 12 - installation

Asked by michael ianni

Hello,

I just downloaded (or so I think) the latest version of Ubuntu. Do I need to burn it to a CD first in order to install it?

I also downloaded Thunderbird to solve another earlier issue. I see the file icon on the computer but unsure about how to actually install these for use.

Anyone>?

Get the .iso file burned to a cd or usb .Boot from the live cd or usb and you will be welcome with the installation option .
For making a live ubuntu usb you can use Unetbootin or Live usb creator .

Thank you for your response. I was able to install Thunderbird by 'extract' -ing the files from computer without downloading on CD/USB somehow.

I will try your suggestion about upgrading, but is there any reason why my current system upgrade option won't do it automatically?

Again, I will try again.

Thanks.

Do you want your installed packages to be upgraded or a distribution upgrade ?

I am afraid I do not know the difference. The main issue is have my microsoft word files not recognized. Which is still the industry standard. I want to work on documents and I know I can save as doc, but when trying to open a doc from USB it won't even know the file.

Would the upgraded Ubuntu find and recognize these docs?
