failed upgrade has lost all files and docs can I recover them have now reinstalled new version of ubuntu

Asked by Oliver Wilkins

I have been prompted to install upgrade of software to latest version 12 having done so, the system would ask for password then the screen would just go blank, eventually downloaded Ubuntu lts 12 and found all files, doc, pdfs, pictures gone.

Can I recover any of these items from the hard drive etc.,

I am a very basic user, so all help would be much appreciated.

Your backups will certainly save the day here.

when you reinstalled, if you selected to wipe all of the drive and reinstall then you may find foremost in a live CD will help get.what you didn't backup howeveryou will need a storage of equal size (or larger) to hold the data as it recovers everything it can.

If the data areas that held the old files have been overwritten by the new install then those files will be completely irretrievable.

Can you help with this problem?
