Will my data be lost?

Asked by Leonard Kinnison

I will not change OS systems if my data will be lost in the transfer. I am not skilled enough to recover from these types of errors.
I need to know if the systems will auto-transfer all of the files during the uninstall of windows and the install of ubuntu ?

It depends how you install Ubuntu. If you use Wubi then it will not affect yor data. If you data is 'important' you will have made a backup. You can resize your NTFS if you use Windows7 or even in the live Ubuntu CD and install a dual boot system that way.

Ubuntu uses Ext 3 file system, where as Windows uses NTFS/Fat 32 file system. Windows cannot recognize your Linux partition as it have different file system. If you want to use linux as your main or only OS then you have to backup your data. You cannot install Ubuntu on NTFS or Fat 32 file system. You can install Ubuntu alongside with windows in two ways as described above by Andrew. The system will not auto transfer data or programs which you are using in windows.

Ubuntu has used Ext4 since Jaunty :). If it was Ext3 then there is http://www.fs-driver.com to read it.

If you need to share data between the dual boot then keep the data on the NTFS. This will cater for both OSes due to Windows' shortfall.
