Will installing Ubuntu Studio from DVD overwrite data folders/files

Asked by Aaron Ceyanes

I recently upgraded Upgraded Ubuntu from Onteric to Precise with no loss of data (Onteric was my first Linux install) and complete data file system and downloaded apps were retained. I ran the upgrade from online. Around the same time I also burned the ISO image for UbuntuStudio onto a DVD. I've run the live DVD without changing my system. I realize the importance of backing-up important data, but currently I'm receiving regular errors through the backup application to UbunutOne. (status 500)

If I Install UbuntuStudio from the LiveDVD, will my data files and installed apps remain intact as with the recent online upgrade, or will It start me with a clean slate? I'll back up my data to a physical external hard drive, but will I have to backup or keep a hard-copy of all the installed apps I wish to keep as well?

Thanks.

Your backups will ensure data integrity.
You don't need to install Ubuntu Studio. The only difference is the default desktop and a few apps. The underlying OS is no different at all. you can install the Ubuntu studio packages on the standing Ubuntu and get Ubuntu studio.

If you want to clean install Ubuntu studio then you will want to format your partitions which won't keep your data in place.
