how do I install Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Win 7 in a separate partition and get to choose a dual boot

Asked by Charles Bunch

I have a 640 Gig Hard drive that I have 3 partitions on. I would like to install Ubuntu on the partition so it will give me a choice of which of the two operating systems to boot to.

It's pretty simple, because the installer will do everything for you. There's some community documentation which is a bit dated but still relevent here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Take note in particular of the advice to back up all your important data. The ubiquity installer will be resizing your Windows partition and if anything should go wrong (eg losing power to the computer) then data loss WILL result. To this end you should also run chkdsk on your hard drive and defrag it as well. Doing these will make it less likely that you will have problems and make the install process very much faster, since the partitioner program won't have to move so much data around.

You could also partition manually, however that is probably a more advanced topic.

You should probably boot off the LiveCD and try Ubuntu first, to make sure that it is going to run OK on your machine.

If you're still unsure after reading that documentation then you should probably ask more questions before proceeding, however the process of actually installing really is very simple.
