Toshiba Satellite M50

Asked by Nina

I just had my Toshiba satellite M50-168 wiped out and so the computer is totally clean. I'm trying to install Ubuntu but my CD dive doesn't work or open so I downloaded Ubuntu using Unetbootin onto a Flash drive. When I turn my laptop on with the USB in ,the computer doesn't boot up in Ubuntu it just stays static. The screeen justs says
"PXE=E61: Media Test Failure, check cable.
PXE=M0F: Exiting PXE ROM."

Currently I don't have a operating system on here and so that is why I'm trying to install Ubuntu.
What should I change on my BIOS setup?
How do I get past this and install Ubuntu?

did you manually download the iso? if so did you md5 test the file you downloaded?

The PXE messages indicate that it is trying to boot off the network.

I am not familiar with the BIOS settings on your laptop, but there should be an option to specify the boot order. Also there may be options to do with booting of removable or USB devices.

See if you can set it to try to boot off the USB stick before anything else.

If you can't get that to work, you could try booting over the network from another machine, but you'd have to set up a PXE server etc. so first try getting the BIOS to boot off the USB stick.

I had the disk image so then I used Unetbootin to load the files on to the flash so it could be bootable.
What does a md5 test mean?

I tried several times to get my computer to boot from the flash I moved the flash drive up the list and disabled the other but nothing. I was only somewhat close to success once when the computer booted into Unetbootin screen but then it said the kernal was unsuccessful because the files were loaded wrong or something. I have tried several times, I even erased the flash and tried downloading it again and still no luck.

Any suggestions next?

Since I don't have a current operating system the only mode options I get when I turn it on is F2 to go to Setup BIOS or F12 to choose my boot options. Both seem useless right now.
