ubuntu will not start up alongside of windows when promp to boot begins but shows error not installed correct.

I added an external drive to carry ubuntu along side of my windows and choice of which when I boot up. windows boots up fine but the ubuntu starts but then it goes to a run type of format. something about not installed correctly it's froze and I have to force shut down to get back on windows. Now I cant find my externak driver and fill it with ubuntu.

Wen starting computer I have a choice of windows or ubuntu. when I choose ubuntu it seems to start up with the ubuntu start up working window. then the screen goes b;ack.with text upper left corner "For more options push esc nowwhen I push esc nothing happens. keyboard becomes unresponsive.

I have a hp slim line a toshiba external hard drive. As the chip is that a downloaded program? Or a component?

We really need to have a lot more information. The chipset information you were asked for is about the video controller inside the computer. You will need to get this information from the Toshiba web-site. You have not told us which version of Ubuntu you were trying to install. You also need to tell us what method you used to install. Did you use a CD? If so, did you put the CD in with Windows running? Did you try to boot from the CD? Did you use the option to 'Try Ubuntu - if so, what happened?
