trouble installing Ubuntu on x79 chip Asus Rampage 4 Mobo

Asked by jerux

I want to dual boot with windows so I can use Ubuntu for main computing and windows for gaming.

I haven't had luck installing any linux disto's except puppy linux.

I have asus rampage 4 extreme motherboard with intel 3960x processor and 2 hd 7970 graphics cards,16 GB 1600 ram corsair vengeance two 8GB sticks.

3tb seagate barricuda hard drive.

Lg blueray burner.

I got ubuntu 11.10 to load at boot but hangs when selecting anything.

I think it should install.

Try the boot option:

nomodeset

You may find you get issues as the i7 will probably have a GPU in it, meaning you have switchable graphics, which can be a real headache under Linux
