Upgrade/install onto another drive

Asked by Samop

Hi Guys

I originally installsed Ubuntu side-by-side with Windows in the NTFS partition and this is running out of space.

I've since then got an additional hard drive and now I want to upgrade Ubuntu to 12.4 it seems sensible to make it a "proper" linux install onto the new drive which has loads of space.

Is the best way to do this as a fresh install (onto the new drive) then transfer all my settings//accounts and whatnot or can I do an "upgrade install" but put everything onto the new drive as part of the upgrade

Does that make sense?

Cheers

Sam

It makes a great deal of sense. I wouldn't attempt to upgrade a wubi installation - most seem to have a problem with this. A second install will be fantastic. Your only problem is getting the data off the wubi installation before you get rid of it. The installation into a separate partition will not be able to see the wubi installation, but will be able to see the NTFS drive. If you have enough space on your NTFS drive, you can copy all the data into a temp directory there, and get it back onto your new EXT4 filesystem from Ubuntu.

To reclaim the space on your Windows drive, you will need to use the Windows uninstaller as wubi simulates a Windows application. This MAY be safe, but no guarantees. Having uninstalled the wubi installation, go into Ubuntu on your new drive and do sudo update-grub which should get your dual boot working properly once more. Please take no chances with your data both under Ubuntu and Windows. The process works most of the time with no hitches BUT .....

Can you help with this problem?
