Installer crash issue desktop

Asked by Anthony Kolhepp

Okay so i finally got to set my computer back up and its an older junk computer but it works. 1 Gig ram, single core 2.2 GHz processor, 2 hard drives. 1 hard drive has all my files the other i wiped and was going to install newest ubuntu on. Only problem is that it keeps crashing. My other hard drive had windows xp on it but won't boot so that is why i am trying to install ubuntu. It gets to the point that it asks for "if you want to copy profiles from other OS" or something like and then crashes. I am trying to install from usb that i set up fine and if i just go directly to install it will go to desktop mode. Try in desktop mode and try to install again it will crash that will turn the screen black and say something odd things like top of the screen it says something about checking battery. Makes no sense and need help.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
If you are using a CD, did you burn it as slowly as possible?

Not sure what MD5 test is. Also i am using USB, not burning to CD unless i have to which i will burn at the lowest then.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

You need to test the ISO, so that you know the data is ok before you transfer to the USB storage

Alright will try that. I installed Ubuntu before but i had no problems with it and didn't have to check. That was version 11.04 i think. Now i am trying the newest. Will update on how it goes.

Re downloaded the iso and did the MD5 check thing. It came out that it was fine but still doesn't work. It still crashes at the same spot.

In the liveCD run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install ubiquity

Then run the installer, may help

FYI i don't have internet on that computer so not sure if that is going to be a problem. I will keep that in mind but i think i will try the text-based installation. Try your idea next if that fails.

Can you successfully run the 'Try Ubuntu' from the USB stick? If not, either you have a faulty USB stick or boot image, OR the version you are trying to install is currently not compatible with your old box. This is more than likely the case. My advice: go for Lubuntu instead of Ubuntu.

I will probably go to old version if i can't figure it out. i can try it and it runs fine its just when i go to install it onto my clean hard drive it crashes. if all else fail i will just use an old version of ubuntu 11.04. i know that one works, or at least worked before.

If it works OK from the USB then it should be possible to install and run. Sorry to ask - but would you be willing to try again and give exact information about where the problem happens. If you have asked it to copy data from your Windows data and Windows is faulty this might be causing the crash. If you try again, tell it not to copy anything from there. You can almost certainly get that data from the NTFS drive after Ubuntu is running. By the way, don't tell it to login with no user password. You will probably need to have the login screen available.

i have it set to log me in automatically and it crashes after. Only thing i click is for it to install fluendo towards the beginning and then go through the other stuff of filling in account. I don't click the copy data from windows and i tell it to continue from there and it tries going to the next thing after and the install crashes. It runs okay but the install itself crashes. i have no idea what is going on and i am just hoping its not that my hard drive went bad.

You will probably need to reset so you have to give a password at login. This will allow you to change from Unity 3D to Unity 2D. Unfortunately if you cant get access to anything, there is a problem. Can you open a terminal by doing CTRL+ALT+t or if not, CTRL+ALT+F1. If you can, you might be able to run the system settings app from the terminal and reset to use password on login.

i have tried it either way. doesn't matter either way if the installer crashes and won't finish installing. i know i need to set it down to run for my bad graphics cards but i can't install so it doesn't matter. i can get to the terminal in the try it ubuntu.

Any time you want to get to a terminal, CTRL+ALT+F1 should get a full text screen terminal. CTRL+ALT+F7 should switch back to X.

Can you help with this problem?
