Will the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit version work on Windows 7, 64bit OS? The iso filename says "amd64"

Will the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit version work on Windows 7, 64bit OS? The iso filename says "amd64" and was wondering if this will work on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or....for 64bit AMD processors only. I have an older Dell Latitude D630 with 2GB RAM....and has been upgraded to Windows 7.

If the CPU is 64bit then it will work. The 'amd64' thing stuck because AMD got to 64bit desktop first and the name just stuck. It's like 'IDE hard drive' just stuck as well. The amd64 ISO will work on Intel 64bit CPUs too.

Am I to understand that you are considering installing on top of Windows using wubi? This means that you are inserting the CD with Windows running? You would be far safer to boot using the CD and follow the options there. Every installation is risky, so make certain that you have backups of everything you need before trying. I'd also strongly recommend that you don't try to install without first running the live-CD to make certain that 12.04 works OK on your system. EXTREME caution advised!!!

Sorry I didn't clarify, I am running VMware Player on the Windows platform (laptop) with Ubuntu installed in the player.

What is the virtual system being used for and how much RAM does it have assigned to it? Why is VMWare not mentioned in your initial question???
