a cd does not have enough space can i use dvd to burn ubuntu 12.04

i want to burn ubuntu 12.04 to cd but there is not enough space can i use a dvd and if i can will it be bootable to replace windows xp.

First be sure to have a good md5sum verified iso image (please use a .torrent file to download it) from here:

http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/

Then be sure to burn the iso file as image ... and be sure to use an empty new cd-r or cd-rw

Yes, you can, but as marcobra said, please verify the MD5SUMS are the same.
