Unrecoverable error while installing 12.04

Asked by Larry Williams

Yesterday I downloaded and burned the CD image of 12.04 with no apparent errors. Since I had 25GB of unallocated space on my hard disk, I chose to install 12.04 along with my current 10.04. The installation appeared to go well while I went through the input steps up to and including entering login and password details. Then the installation began. Shortly after, I got an error message. "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again". After 2 attempts to install and getting the same message both times, I'm at a loss. Has anyone else had this kind of results? What did you find?

Any ideas?

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as possible?

Andrew, no, I did not MD5 test the iso, I don't know how, and I didn't make any changes to the cd burner. I just went with whatever the default was.

Andrew, Thanks for forcing me to educate myself on how to run an MD5 test. I just did it against the iso file and the sum matched perfectly. (d791352694374f1c478779f7f4447a3f).

According to the "SMART Data" in the disk utility of 10.04, my hard disk has 5 bad sectors. The item #5 labeled "Reallocated Sector Count" is in RED and issues a "pre-fail warning".

I knew this disk was getting old and purchased another one about a month ago. I've had no trouble running with 10.04 but the drive is about 10 years old. Apparently, all the problems are in the unallocated area.

I guess I'll have to install the replacement drive now. This item should be closed, too, since the problem appears to be hardware related.

Thanks again Andrew, at least I know now how to run a MD5 sum test.
