Failed 64bit Ubuntu install caused Windows to not boot

Asked by mrsim3000

I have two hard drives.
- 1st 250 GB with windows
-2nd 1tb with ubuntu 32bit

So I realized that ubuntu had a a64 bit release and decided to try to upgrade my 32 bit ubuntu to 64 bit.... since i have quad AMD 64bit processors

used lived cd and decided to reformat 1tb hard disk since 32 bit ubuntu was on it and install 64bit but i noticed something i didn't notice before. there was an option for "select destination for boot loader" or something like that and I don't know what exactly i picked but ive never had to deal with that option before.

for some reason the 64bit installation failed and i exited.

now I can only boot into 32bit ubuntu and windows wont boot nor is it in boot options. however in ubuntu upon mounting the 250gb hard disk (where windows is installed) shows all the windows files intact.

Soooo im confused.

I have downloaded boot-repair app within ubuntu and this did not help.

I have also loaded default Bios settings

Just open a terminal windows and type:

sudo update-grub

To get grub to re-configure. It should now show both Windows and Ubuntu in the grub screen.

BTW the most likely reason for the failed install is a damaged iso download. You should always check the md5sum of the downloaded iso before using it, burn the CD at the slowest possible speed, and check the integrity of the CD before you use it.
