Possible to install ubuntu on external harddrive and everything saves to external harddrive?

Lemme explain. So i love ubuntu. But i dont have an official computer. If i install to an external harddrive will it not only boot up ubuntu (Guessing it does), but also saves my files and programs to it? It would be cool to have a computer on a small external harddrive and just take everything with me.

Yes create a USB install with persistence and the changes will stay
