Can I install desktop edition and amp as virtual server?

Asked by Cesar Balderrama

Excuse me, I'm a novice and want to install LAMP in any way I can do it, in order to run PHP and MySQL.
I would like to work in local, I mean work in the same machine just to make tests before uploading my scripts to a web server in the internet.

Can I install the Ubuntu desktop edition and then install AMP as a virtual server? or
If I install the Ubuntu server edition will I be able to browse my web pages in the same pc or will I need to work from another machine over my network?

I would prefer to install the desktop edition, in order to get the advantages of this fantastic OS.
Can this be done?

Help, please...

You can either use Ubuntu Desktop Edition with a LAMP installed locally or use Ubuntu Desktop Edition with Ubuntu Server Edition installed within a virtual machine.

If you're developing locally and you want to test your code then there's really no reason to use Ubuntu Server Edition within a virtual machine, as you can just install a LAMP within Ubuntu Desktop Edition.

I installed the desktop edition in a partition of my hard disk and when start the machine and choose the ubuntu OS to load it asks me to select:

Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-12-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-12-generic (recuperation or something like that)

If I choose the first option a message like this appears:

error: file not found
error: you need to load the kernel first

How can I download the kernel?
