Attempting to put Ubuntu on the laptop as the only operating system. on loading the cd-rom I get a screen which says loading caldera DR-DOS...

Asked by paul fellows

Having completely obliterated Windows with an ill advised attempt to recover using a recovery disc for a different computer

I am now attempting to put Ubuntu on the lap top as the only operating system.
on loading the cd-rom I get a screen which says loading caldera DR-DOS.

It goes through various things including one where it says no FAT32 files found.

Eventually it comes down to a command prompt [DR-DOS] A:\>

I know this is diskette drive A.

but as Im using the cd rom to try to load ubuntu I can't seem to find tyhe right drive.

nor do I know the right commands to continue.

Is there any hope or should I consign the laptop to the rubbish bin and admit defeat.

The laptop is a Dell Latitude D600.

You have not burned the disk properly. You have made a DOS bootable disk instead. Burning a disk is a special operation which will make a Linux bootable disk. Look at this page: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download click on No. 2 " Burn your CD or create a bootable USB stick"

I have 3 Dell C400s. The Dell D600 has an Intel video card. You need to look at this: http://insidesocal.com/click/2010/02/intel-82830-cgc-830m-graphics.html

Have you got a special Dell CD-Rom module? If not it will not boot from an ordinary external Hard Drive or USB...

How much RAM has your computer got?
