Having trouble installing with usb or cd.

Asked by Kayla Roy

Yesterday, I tried to install Ubuntu on my older pc (windows xp). I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and the USB software. Everything was working fine until the final step. I restarted my computer and pressed F1 to get into the BIOS settings. Once there I went into the boot sub-section and there was the problem. There was floppy, HDD, CD-ROMM, but there was no USB one. So now I don't know how I can change my computer so the USB will run first.

I also tried to install it via CD. Since the computer I am installing it one is xp it said to use a dvd. I downloaded the software for it and put in a DVD-r. It said writable but unusable. I also put a CD in, but it was un writable and unusable. Which type of DVD do I need to use?

Thanks,
Kayla

How did you burn the CD. Did you burn it as data or as a data disk (data disk will just have the ISO as a file on the disk and is not the correct way to burn the image).

What app did you burn with?

I could not burn it. I tried to use ISO recorder do you think the Infra Recorder would work?

well, the best would be to use a CD-RW or DVD-RW and use a good disk burning software. u can use nero/ashampoo etc. Burn them at the lowest speed possible. Also, Honestly, it seems that your Bios does not support boot from usb option. so using CD or DVD would be the best.

I did the USB and it works fine but when i boot without the usb it says there is no Bios. When you install Ubuntu you get the option of where to download the files. I tried downloading it a couple of times onto the harddrive but it still dows not let me. I checked the files on my hard drive and they are there(with usb) but it still wont boot. I tried the option of "boot from hard drive" but it does not work, it breifly goes to a code looking page and returns to the Bios Menu.
