extending the casper -rw file

Asked by atar

Hi there!!

Just wanted to know if there is any way to extend the size of the casper -rw persistent file if I find that its current size is not enough to my changes.

Thanks in advance!!

I just found this:
http://bsandc.blogspot.com.au/2011/04/how-to-change-size-of-persistence-in.html

If it actually works this way, it's a very simple if extremely dangerous fix. I haven't done it, but probably will try it at some point.

I recommend that you take a backup copy of casper-rw and proceed _very_ carefully. If you make a mistake with dd and write to (for example) elsewhere on your hard drive then there will be little chance of recovery.

I've used dd to blow away partition tables on USB sticks and to clone entire USB sticks. It's very powerful and assumes that you know _exactly_ what you are doing.

Thanks you very much about your help. I appreciate it, but unfortunately, I'm afraid to follow the instructions described there because I'm novice in Ubuntu and I'm afraid to harm to my hard disk.

However thanks you about your attention.

If you will find a more friendly way to do that, I'll thank you if you'll share it with me.

Cheers!

I also found similar instructions here:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/how-to-create-a-larger-casper-rw-loop-file/

I can probably give you command line instructions that if followed exactly will be quite safe. I need to know a bit more about how you are running Ubuntu and where the casper-rw file actually is. Is this on a pendrive, a wubi install, or something else?

Do you have an alternate Ubuntu boot such as a liveCD, LiveUSB, or a full install on a portable device? You can't resize the casper-rw file while it is mounted and being used.
