Change of OS system Packer Bell 2.9GHz

Asked by Rich.b

I would like some advice please on the following PC running XP

Packard Bell 2.9GHz
Name IMEDIA 1328
Model Type UTOW-SAM
MSIOHQL No: SAN1058593
S/No: 049652020726
PID 0496520207P/No: PB34225201

Has 2 hard drives fitted (not sure of the Size, 1 for Programmes 1 Data) and 256MB Ram.

I will be installing a new OS and at least 1GB ram possibly 2 GB.

This PC belongs to a neighbour and she would like to be able to use Spotify, do proof reading and read emails.

At first I was thinking of installing Windows 7 but because it's “Windows “and the cost, I am now looking at Mint12 or Ubuntu 11.10

Q1/ Could you recommend Mint 12 or Ubuntu 11.10 and could I use 64bits install ? I am using Ubuntu 11.10 but Mint 12 sounds very good.

I suggest you to install the stable Ubuntu 11.10 http://releases.ubuntu.com/

or wait some days and try the incoming 12.04 in beta 2 stage http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/

if your processor is a 64 bits capable processor install the 64 bits release.

To discover your processor detail please boot you pc from an Ubuntu live install cd ( no matter the release of live Ubuntu cd ) and type:

lshw -c cpu

Mint isn't supported i any of the ubuntu channels so I'd say to use Ubuntu. Could try both and see what you think
