Ubuntu 11.10 or 11.04 and new system based on AMD

Asked by Adam Racięcki

Hi Ubuntu users!

I have a question about AMD based systems and Ubuntu 11.10 or 11.04. I have recently purchased a system with spec (short version):

Chipset AMD A75
Processor AMD A Series A4-3400
RAM 4 GB (DDR3 1333 MHz )
Raid: Yes
SATA II: Yes

Do you know any troubles with installing Ubuntu 11.10 on that PC? I've already found some advices on other forums that it is better to install 11.04 on AMD A Series A4. Is that true? I haven't been using Ubuntu for a longer time so any advices are highly appreciated!

Thanks

As the core CPU and ram are standardised components, these are rarely, if ever, problematic. Problems usually occur with peripheral components (printers, scanners etc), some wifi devices, very occasionaly wired network devices, and video cards.

If you have any concerns, try a liveCD first -- that way you don't need to install it to test drive each bit (eg make sure wifi works, printers and scanner etc). Using a liveCd, the OS is kept on the CD and in ram, so no changes are made to your hard drive, and a simple reboot will restore everything as it was.
